“Have you ever tried glass noodles?” My aunt asked, in another place.


“Your grandma used to make this dish — it was so good — sotanghon — glass noodles and chicken, it was so simple. I used to fight with them all the time about eating Filipino food. I’d eat yogurt instead. ‘I’m not trying that, I used to say.”

She paused.

“After she died, I missed her cooking so much. I can get things close, but it never tastes exactly the same. But when we were in Hawaii, we were at a luau and they had it! They had sotanghon. Out of all of the things they they had there, I only wanted to eat that. I kept going back for seconds…because it tasted just like hers.”
