Turo-Turo Philippine Cafe

There was a Kiwi customer who came in to Turo-Turo Philippine Cafe in Auckland, NZ recently. A complete first-timer.

He ordered tapsilog, caldereta, and tokwa’t baboy – and seemed quite excited about his choices.

Ten minutes after taking away his order, however, he was back – and wanting a refund.

He pointed to the tapa.  “I can’t eat this!” he complained.  Then to the container of ulam for the caldereta: “this portion is too small!”

He went on: “I’ve been all through South East Asia and I’ve never had food like this. I should’ve gone to my usual Chinese takeaway.”

So we refunded him. He hadn’t liked his choices.

But it highlighted a couple of issues we have noticed before with Kiwis (and perhaps foreigners in general) and Filipino food.

They are:

  1. Not knowing what to expect

This is Filipino food. It’s not Thai, it’s not Malaysian, it’s not Indonesian…
